Thanksgiving Fun

We went to Nana & Papa's for Thanksgiving Day. Kelly brought her Turkey that we made as a homework project for school - we thought it came out pretty good. Nana used it as a centerpiece for dinner!

Kelly loves to play Gee-Gee's beautiful organ. The first time she sat down, she knew exactly where the little power switch was and turned it on - believe me, with all those buttons and gadgets, it takes most adults 10 minutes to find it. We think she's a natural!
Is it time for dinner YET???
The whole gang (except for mommy who was behind the camera as usual!)
We were all feeling a little punchy after our big meal!
Eating & laughing, having a good time together, that's what we do best!

Time to go - we had a wonderful day with family!

Charger Fan!

I thought I was the #1 Charger Fan in the house, but this year, I have been surpassed! And she has her little cheer down pat, "Gooo Ooooh Chargers! Touchdown, touchdown! Gooo Ooooh Chargers! YEAH!" (Nikki you'd be proud!) She rousts Daddy pretty good about the 49ers too! I just sit back and enjoy! HA!

Girly

Kelly had her good friend, Krysta, over for a playdate the other day. Their favorite thing to do together is to play dress up. In fact, the moment Krysta walks in the door, she makes a B-line to the dress-up trunk in Kelly's room. Krysta is Kelly's most "girly" friend and they really enjoy hanging out together!

They had many costume changes thruout the day.

Then they sat and "window shopped" the Target and Toys R US catalogs pointing out all the things they wanted to "buy". They were like two girlfriends sharing their wish list, "Ohhh, this is soooo cuuuute! I am going to buy THIS.... Oh, yeah, and this tooooooo!!!" Glad they have a good imagination!

Dohrer Art

Kelly is constantly bringing home art projects from school. She loves to draw, paint, color, cut, glue, fold...whatever it takes to make a work of art come to life. Everyone told me about how hard it would be to figure out which works of art to save and what to, well, have disappear, because we figure we can't keep everything, right?! Well...that has definitely been a challenge and I have at least two boxes so far...ugh! So I've pretty much decided to put off deciding what to keep and what to get rid of! Maybe I'll just give it all to her when she is old enough so SHE can decide! HA!

In the meantime though, the best of the best get some display time in the house.
We started with her bedroom door, which quickly filled up.

The display then overflowed to our bedroom door, which also filled up pretty quickly.

Kelly then decided that James' bedroom door deserved some too!

Here is our family portrait (she told me she ran out of room for Willie & James, sorry!)

And her self-portrait...which I thought was very interesting.
She has no idea how accurate this is - she IS a Gemini!!!

I'm not sure what we'll do when we run out of doors & walls. I may have to create a special Dohrer Art blog just for all her creations!

Halloween FUN...FINALLY!

I must say that after several past year's Halloween fiascos & mishaps, this year definitely made up for all of that and more! It was just awesome - could not have been better!

We kicked off the season with a visit to the local pumpkin patch, which is actually more like a huge Halloween carnival down across from the Del Mar racetrack, complete with jumpies, rides and a petting zoo. Kelly had a blast riding on the little train and was doing the queen's wave at everyone as she zoomed by.

Kelly was truly my partner in crime this year when it came to decorating. I hauled my 3 Halloween boxes out of the garage and we both gleefully opened them up to see what we had! She helped carefully and strategically place every single decoration and couldn't wait to show them off to everyone who came in the door - "look over HEEEERE at this decoration! And over HEEEERE at this one too!"

In early October, I starting asking Kelly what she wanted to be for Halloween. She started with Dora, then a princess, then switched to Hello Kitty for a while. I thought that might be a tough one. And suddenly I was getting this bad feeling... this was starting to feel a little like last year... (see "The Halloween Costume" Blog from last year and you'll understand!)

But then a couple weeks before Halloween she said she wanted to be a butterfly. She kept on that for several days so we started looking at costumes online. I showed her pictures of pretty pink and purple butterfly costumes, but she quickly made a face at me and said firmly, "No, mommy. I want to be a MONARCH butterfly! You know...they are ORANGE and BLACK!". Gulp. Great. Where am I going to find such a specific type of butterfly costume? (and not have it cost a fortune?) Well... the Halloween Gods, er um, or ghouls, were smiling down on me this year because Target actually had one! Whew!

To try to help avoid what happened last year, I got her completely involved in the finding and purchasing of this costume. Problem was, they were sold out online, and when I started calling around to the stores, they were either completely out or out of her size or had only pieces left of her size...oops, would this backfire on me? Did I now set her up for major disappointment? Thankfully, I got a break...we found a store that had one, and I had them put it on hold for us. Kelly and I cheered and high-fived each other and jumped in the car to go and get that costume! I had her run up to the counter and ask the lady for it, and when she brought it out, we jumped for joy and high-fived again! She held on to it the whole way home and we talked endlessly about how lucky we were to find it! And arn't we just SOOOO excited to get home and try it on!?? (part 2 of why last year's costume didn't work out was waiting until day of to let her try it on, so I was going to do that different this year too!)

She couldn't wait to try it on, and when she did, I almost cried she looked so darn cute! (I know! this is how I set myself up, huh?) And to my great satisfaction, she looked at herself in the mirror, smiled, then turned to me and said, "mommy, I LOVE my Monarch butterfly costume!" So cool! (But yes, in the back of my mind, I was thinking... "you say that NOW, I hope you will say that on Halloween!")

I figured her pre-school would be doing dress-up and some sort of Halloween activities Friday, the day before Halloween. So I called the school and asked them a gazillion questions on exactly what they'd be doing and how it would be managed (again, this being driven by my bad experience from last year's catastrophe at daycare!). They calmed my fears and assured me to let her come in costume (as that was part of the fun, the "grand entrance"). They would have the parade first thing in the morning and then remove costumes for playtime on the playground and snack etc. Good. Yes. So I also gave explicit instructions to the teacher, and both assistants about hanging the costume back up, not stuffing it in her cubby etc. I know, I'm a freak and I'm sure the teachers think that too, but this year, I was determined for her to have that costume to wear on the actual day of Halloween!

Soooo... here she is Friday morning on our way out the door to pre-school. I told her to "fly like a butterfly!"Her pre-school has a Nanny Cam, so I of course kept my eye on them while I was at work to make sure all was well, and it was. Whew! Day before Halloween success! I was on a roll!

The day of Halloween, Nana, Papa and Gee-Gee-Vee (Great-Gma Verna) came down to watch Kelly's swim lesson, have Halloween lunch and see Kelly get ready in her costume for trick-or-treating. Kelly was very excited to show off her costume! Sigh...this was FUN FINALLY! Grandad also popped by during the day to say hi and visit before all the later evening kid festivities.

After the peeps left, and we were all dressed and ready, we met up with Kelly's friends, Krysta and Skye, and their parents and friends over at the Leucadia Oaks park to trick-or-treat in the nice neighborhood there where Aunty Lynda and Leif live. The whole neighborhood there - all the houses were decorated and almost everyone was home to greet us. In fact, Grand-dad was hanging out over at Auntie Lynda & Leif's, so that was an extra treat seeing him there too! The girls had a blast, giggling and scurrying around together, and shouting at the top of their lungs "TRICK-OR-TREAT!!!", and there were no costume malfunctions, no sugar-high melt downs, etc! Great fun! Here is our family Halloween portrait... "the Witch, the Bob, and the Butterfly"!Afterwards, we all came back to our place to party - the kids AND the parents!

We had SOOO much fun! And I finally had all my Halloween hopes and expectations fulfilled! Geez was it really going to be that difficult every year? After this year, I PROMISE, not to worry about it so much!

First Swim Lessons

Kelly has always loved the water - ocean or pool - and we've been meaning to get her in swim lessons forever and so finally, we've done it. We signed her up at the Magdalena Ecke YMCA in Encinitas, and she goes every Saturday now. They have a huge teaching pool and wonderful, patient instructors. Although she is still very much a beginner, she loves the water and had no fear at all in participating in the class by herself, with me across the other side of the pool in the bleachers.

She's learning to blow bubbles, hold her breath under water, kick, paddle and float. She's making great progress and we'll probably sign her up again for November to keep her progress going thru winter (the pool area is enclosed and very toasty warm!). Hopefully she'll be swimming on her own and all ready come next summer!

Doctor Kelly

I guess it starts with the stuffed animals... Hopefully they will be the only patients she needs while she's exploring the "Playing Doctor" phase!!

Here she is explaining to me in great detail the nature of Pooh's illnesses, and more importantly what she will need to do to make him all better! Oh, and also, that she can see me next! YIKES!

Uncle Johnny

Kelly just LOVES her Uncle Johnny! He has been working most of the past year up at Mammoth, so we don't get to see him as much. But when he is home for his short visits, we do try to see each other, and he always has to get his Kelly time. We miss him and hope to see him again at the holidays!

The Value of Friendship...

There are so many things a parent wants to teach their child, but I think there are some things that really come to the surface... the things that are THE most important values the parent carries. One of those for me is friendship - choosing good friends to have around you and being a good friend.

It is only recently that Kelly seemed to take a real interest in which friends she wanted to spend time with. Somewhere between 3 & 4, this change occurred - she wasn't just spending time playing with these kids because us moms put them together for a play date, she truly wanted to be with them because SHE considered them her good friends, and she now asks to be with them. I am no longer just running my own social life, I am now the assistant social director for HER social life as well!

I think one of Kelly's first real good friends is Kainoa. She got to spend a lot of time with him during the two months of daycare at Chelsea's earlier this year. But even before that, in between and since then, they still love to see each other and start playing and chatting and having fun as if no time has passed - that is a quality that helps friends stay friends over long periods of time, even though things in their life change and keep them apart sometimes. Kainoa recently got a baby sister, Ocean Marie, and they are living a few miles further away, but they still love to see each other every chance they get.

Because of our 24/7 schedule, working Realtor moms often have to bring their kids with them to show homes or drop by the office. We've found it is always better if there is another kid involved to help keep them occupied. This is how the friendship started with Karlee - my friend and colleague, Isabel, would bring her daughter Karlee in with her now & then, so we started trying to overlap those times whenever possible to get them together and so we could get more work done at the same time. The very first time they met, they gave each other a big (adorable) hug! These two just dug each other instantly - they both have a great sense of silly, goofy humor and really love just hamming it up together! So now Kelly asks to see Karlee often, and we try to make special dates for them regardless of our work schedule!

We met Skye at our little local Leucadia park. Skye already had a ton of little friends that she would be playing with, but she'd always try to include Kelly. And soon Kelly was playing with the group too. Skye also has a little baby brother, Caspian, who Kelly enjoyed oohing and ahhing over. Because we just live down the street from each other, Skye and Kelly (and Caspian) spent a good deal of time together this summer at the park, at the beach, and at each other's homes when one or the other of us parents has needed a break. This has become a case where the kids brought two moms together (and now the dads too) who may not have otherwise met or became friends, so Kelly has helped me to expand my local circle of friends as well :-)

I was referred some new clients a few months ago through our USAA program at C21, and on their referral note it said they wanted a Realtor who was, (and I quote) "comfortable and personable, don't have to be overly proper - a little loose, can take a joke. Somebody fun!!! A help with the stress factor." I was pretty excited to call them - I knew they'd probably be great people and that I'd probably be what they're looking for! What I didn't know was that they also had a great little 4-year-old daughter named Krysta that was as cool and fun as they were. When they asked if I minded Krysta coming along to look at homes.... I took the opportunity to bring Kelly along as well.

So Kelly & Krysta's first few "play dates" together were really househunting trips, but they became fast friends and were good little househunting troopers. We kept saying we should get them together outside of "work", and finally, we have. They enjoy playing together for longer periods of time where they can really have some fun without having to constantly get in and out of a car, go in and out of houses and not touch anything!

I think some of my influence certainly does make an impression and is helping to mold her, but honestly, I believe Kelly has an innate sense of the virtues of friendship and I can see that she values and truly loves being with her friends... as much as I do with mine!

Random Acts of Cuteness

Dress-up is an almost daily activity!
Showing off her new, big-girl, and very PINK, booster seat!
Riding in the car has never been more fun!

She made a cool S.C.U.B.A. diving mask at school,
so we went "swimming" around the house one day.

Think "The Little Mermaid", the scene when Ariel pops up out of the water...
"Someday I'll beeeee... part of that woooorld!!!!"

A Day at the Races

Del Mar is a busy place in summer - first we have 4-5 weeks of the fair. Daddy took Kelly one or two days, but mommy passed this year. Then right on its heels is the Del Mar horseracing season which lasts about 7-8 weeks. This is daddy's favorite, of course. And they have done a great job at making the infield a whole lot of fun for families. So we headed down for a day of fun, sun and racing.

They have a really cool mural painted along the wall of the "under track tunnel" leading to the infield with images of the people and places in Del Mar/San Diego, past & present.

The infield is like a kids' paradise, full of fun things to keep them busy while parents make their bets and watch the races! There are bouncehouses, games, and our favorite, Dooney's magic show!

We took a cooler full of drinks & snacks and picnicked under a tree. There are pony rides (which Kelly opted out of this year), facepainting and tatoo artists - all for free!
Kelly chose a beautiful butterfly facepainting....

and Hello Kitty tattoo!

We had a great day!
